People who end up at a crossroads in their careers often are left trying to figure out how to get to where they want to be. How do I get out of a rut? How do I earn a promotion? How do I change my career? How do I get better paying clients? How the heck do I earn more money and FINALLY achieve financial independence? While all these are necessary questions you may need to answer at some point in your life, there is one question in particular that begs for an answer before attacking any one thing in an endless list of How's: Why?
Why are you considering whatever it is you’ve been wanting to do? Why do you want to learn a new skill or improve an existing one? Why are you even...here?
There is something about focusing on How that tends to stop us dead in our tracks. When trying to answer a how, we usually find that in order to achieve something worthwhile, there’s just so much that can be done. Worse, everything may start to look, and feel, impossible. Then...we start talking ourselves out of it; and a few days - or merely hours - later, we go RIGHT back to where we started: that miserable state of wanting a big change that we just don’t know how to carry out.
On the other hand, focusing on Why tends to carry us forward, whether we’re aware of it or not. If and when you’ve found your Why, you’ll know, because no matter what adversity is brought on by your How, your Why will always pull you through. Because “He who has a why can endure any how,” said the philosopher Frederick Nietzsche.
Is money a good enough Why? Possibly, if you’re down to your last dollar, rent is due in a week, and you’ve gotta hustle and figure things out, fast! That being said, many extremely successful people will tell you that money is a secondary benefit. Franklin D. Roosevelt once said, “Happiness is not in the mere possession of money; it lies in the joy of achievement, in the thrill of creative effort.”
So...Why are you here? What were you put on this earth to do?
All you need is a good Why. One that speaks to your soul. A Why that, when times are tough and roadblocks abound, you can count on to light the fire in your belly that fills you with the desire to take that first step to greatness.
